Childhood Tastes and Adult Cravings
So when I was in Europe, I had a conversation with a friend of mine from Australia. He grew up in the US but moved to Oz when he was pretty young (mid 20s), so he has some interesting cross-cultural perspectives at times. One time we were riding on the train and there were some kids next to us eating extremely sweet and fruity smelling candy and he remarked that Australians don't tend to have a sweet tooth. Many Americans, of course, develop a sweet tooth, too, based on childhood classics like Cap'n Crunch or Monster Cereals. My friend said that Australians tend not to, because they're usually given salty treats as children, e.g., the stereotypical Vegemite sandwich. (This was a great childhood mystery to me. Before Paul Hogan and later Steve Irwin, the most notable source of information about Oz was, of course, Men at Work songs.)
Strangely enough, I'm definitely more of a "salt tooth" than a sweet tooth person. It's not unusual for me to leave half a dessert behind but I will happily over-eat olives, cheese, crackers, hot sauce, etc. (Well happily until later, when the thirst and bloating kick in.) Quite possibly because mom didn't let me have much sugar as a child?
